Smut University – Emotional Side of Sex

Writing Exercise

Being part of a fandom that is about 95% female ( and yes I completely made that number up but crap looks right) we should, if we follow stereotypes, meaning that we get some fantastic, romance novel worthy (but not as cheesy) smut, right? Wrong. One of the biggest issues in smut writing as a fandom is the common misunderstanding to what counts as being “sexy”.

Does sexy have to mean all nakedness and pounding headboards and ass slaps? Or can it be sexy to have an E & B who make soft sweet love. Today’s lesson is about finding the Emotional side of smut.

Anyone who knows me knows I’m all about some hardcore banging. Anywhere. Anytime. Any hole. Haha But I also firmly believe that EVERY act of sex has some emotional underlying cause. Whether it’s a quick BJ on the staircase of a party or losing your virginity. So it is important to always tell your readers what those emotions are.

Today’s writing exercise (which you should all do after reading this) is a very helpful tool to use when writing. Start a scene out by just writing the physical. Then go back and fill in the emotional blanks. By doing this you cover both bases.

A couple of tips:

  •  Have a clear idea of where you want this to go. What is bringing your characters to this location and time?
  • Do not get too stuck on where you want your characters to go. Let them guide you.
  • Use personal experience
  • Have fun and let loose. Being comfortable comes out in your writing.
